Turin City Breaks
Turin City Breaks – A place of power
Set against the spectacular backdrop of the River Po and the Alps, Turin, in the north-west of Italy, was the country’s first capital of the newly proclaimed United Italy in 1861. During a city break here, Turin’s stature is evident through beautiful baroque façades, courtyards, tree-lined boulevards and wide-open piazzas. The name Turin comes from Tau, a Celtic word that means mountains. Its Italian name, Torino, translates as ‘little bull’. The area was settled by the Taurini in pre-Roman times and by approximately 28BC, about 5,000 inhabitants resided inside the city walls. Nearly, two thousand years later and the city reacted to losing its crown to Rome by undergoing rapid industrialisation resulting in the founding of Fiat in 1899.
