U Fleku – Heaven for Serious Beer Lovers

 

Czech beer is famous throughout the world and almost as desirable to beer connoisseurs as premium Bavarian and Belgian brews. City breaks in Prague you can enjoy a tipple or two in a city that certainly likes to let its hair down and party hard. It says a lot for the city that one of Prague's most popular attractions is the historic U Fleku, a world famous bar and microbrewery that has been serving up pints of strong ale for over 500 years. Situated at Kremencova, close to the National Theatre, U Fleku is housed in a lovely Gothic style gabled building and is surprisingly large, comprised of a series of interconnecting rooms laid out like a typical German beer hall.

With a capacity for over 1,200 drinkers, U Fleku is a vast place. There is a large beer garden for al fresco dining during and a further eight rooms all decorated in rustic wooden panelling and adorned with antique plaques. Uniquely U Fleku serves just one kind of drink - its very own world famous ale called the 'Flek Dark Double Lager' which is brewed on the premises and found nowhere else in the world. The atmosphere is typically convivial with long wooden benches perfect for interacting with locals and other visitors. Weekends will see live accordion bands, Czech Polka dancing displays and occasionally full blown cabaret shows. You can almost imagine yourself being at the rowdy Munich Oktoberfest.

U Flek has a traditional food menu of typically hearty Czech meals such as pork, duck, goulash and plump sausages served with knedliky bread dumplings and lashings of gravy - the perfect way to soak up a few strong beers. You can delve into its glorious past a little more by viewing the interesting exhibits which are housed in the old Malt House, now a museum. You will find old brewing equipment, instruments and antique beer steins on display along with many atmospheric photographs of nights in the bar from years gone by.
