The Venice Carnival – An explosion of colour and revelry 

One of the oldest festivals in Europe, the Venice Carnival dates back to the 13th century and has always been about magic, mystery and colourful spectacle. Venice Carnival is a celebration of art and expression that sees locals and tourists come together during two weeks of processions, masquerades, music and dance. Numerous events and festivities take place in the palaces, theatres, squares and streets of the famous old city which see a multitude of musicians, actors and acrobats offering fabulous fun and entertainment. The beauty of the Venice Carnival is in its spectacle of masks and exuberant period costume and every tourist is encouraged to dress up during festivities. Masks, cloaks and wigs are available for hire or purchase at many tourists shops throughout the city during “Carnevale” or for those seeking authenticity, hand crafted papier-mâché masks are available at many traditional workshops. A masked gala ball is simply a must during a Venice short break at Carnival time where a night of refined dining and music is guaranteed. Grand events are hosted at many extravagant venues such as La Fenice opera house.

Public events at the Venice Carnival include a grand opening parade, a procession of the most extravagant costumes, music concerts and fireworks.
