Vienna Weather

Vienna weather – Comfortable, if a bit chilly!
Vienna has a very temperate climate – with warm, sunny summers and cold winters – which renders air-conditioning unnecessary. The city’s climate is generally mild and continental and a moderate westerly wind often makes cool days even cooler. The Viennese embrace this because it brings fresh air from the surrounding Vienna Woods to the city. A short weekend break here is worthwhile at any time of the year, whatever the weather

Viennese summers – can be surprisingly warm
Summers are usually hot and dry. July and August temperatures generally range between 15C and 25C but can occasionally nudge nearer to 30C. Thunderstorms occur frequently in summer and the weather can be quite changeable. If you do get caught out by a shower, there are plenty of places to shelter in the many parks, or perhaps a ‘Beisl’, a traditional small Austrian pub.

Vienna weather - Winter warmers
A sunny autumn day in Vienna can be spectacular with coloured leaves in one of the city’s many outdoor spaces, but winter time is when Vienna really comes to life. This part of Austria is rather dry and is influenced by continental Europe so cold winds from the east and Russia can lower winter temperatures considerably. With this in mind, ensure adequate clothing is packed; gloves, hats, jumpers and scarves are a must! Imagine a Christmas card scene with snow-covered buildings and rooftops – that’s Vienna in winter. Despite the cool temperatures, the city looks stunning.
