Bratislava Getting Around
Discover the sights on foot or by bicycle
Bratislava is best enjoyed on foot, leisurely strolling around historic streets, meandering through street markets or relaxing with a beer in a pavement cafe. Cycling is also a popular way of getting around Bratislava and virtually everywhere is accessible safely on two wheels. The historic old town is mainly free of traffic and bicycles can be hired cheaply from a limited number of outlets in the city.
Integrated public transport
Mass public transport is efficient with an extensive tram network traversing the city and its outlying environs with no more than a few minutes’ walk between city centre stops. There are three main interchanges that allow direct travel to almost everywhere in the metropolitan area with less frequent services elsewhere. Trolley buses, resembling conventional buses, are powered by overhead electricity and services cover a wide area. Spacious and comfortable, these offer a more ethical alternative to diesel powered bus travel. Integrated ticketing on all modes of transport - buses, trams and trolley buses - allow for seamless travel and tickets are time coded, providing unlimited journeys from one hour up to two days. These can be purchased at stations and city kiosks.
Great value taxi hire
Private taxi operators are abundant and can be either pre-booked or stopped by the roadside. Visitors will find that many congregate outside many of the major hotels and are among the cheapest in Europe. Taxis can also be chartered by the hour or day if required, and this represents good value and convenience, especially if visiting attractions outside the city. A romantic Danube river cruise should not be overlooked purely as a way of getting around Bratislava, and is without doubt the most civilised and evocative way to travel and an essential part of any stay.
