You really do have two options at Christmas time: to dive into the Christmas spirit head-on; or to avoid it and get as far away as possible. Cities like Berlin, Rome, London and Brussels are loaded with Christmas markets, spectacular displays of lights, decorations and other events to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Food is particularly important at Christmas time and markets in Berlin abound with ginger bread, stollen and other treats to help you see in the festivities. London is another great city to visit for its spectacular lights and shopping to be had on Oxford Street, Regent Street and Covent Garden Market. A Christmas city break can be all you need to lift your spirits and get you into the swing of the season.

 

There are few places in the world where you can get away from the Christmas lights and decorations. However, if you want some great sunshine during your city break then head towards destinations like Rio de Janeiro, Bangkok, Cape Town or San Francisco. You'll be able to catch some sunshine, particularly useful if you suffer from SAD, and you'll find that any Christmas festivities are an altogether different experience in the sunshine. Look out for deals, particularly last minute, and you might find that you can see some spectacular destinations without breaking your budget.

A low cost city break in December means finding the best deals. Booking early is the only way to guarantee a favourite hotel, and if you leave it to the last minute then you may have to fly to a destination you wouldn't have otherwise chosen. Look out for package deals at Christmas time. They'll give you the flexibility of flights, meals and accommodation included in the price, allowing you to see a city without spending the world.
