Berlin City Breaks
A guide to Berlin
This important European city has multiple facets, with a host of historic sights and unique museums and galleries to view. Visiting in summer time will allow you to experience the city in its outdoor mode, with young people enthusiastically enjoying the parks and many outdoor spaces that the city is famous for, whilst winter means sampling the treats on offer at the huge number of Christmas markets; an ideal way to enjoy the cakes and other desserts available, and soak up the festive atmosphere and charm.
Important German city, historic sights to see
No trip to Berlin is complete without a visit to Checkpoint Charlie, the staging post on the Berlin Wall where many escapes were attempted, or take in the Brandenburg Gate, and here you can learn about the wall that divided the city for so many years and Berlin's recent history. Step back in time and take an evocative tour of the Holocaust Museum, or the Topography of Terror, both of which highlight the horrors of the last century. You can also tour The Reichstag, with its clear domed roof, and take in great views over the city.
Impressive art scene, huge cultural relevance
For a more modern respite, visit the many boutique shops and bars in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district where young hippies, artists and restauranteurs have set up shop in the many warehouses and old industrial buildings of the city. The East Side Gallery is the largest open-air gallery in the world and a must-see, whilst the Tacheles Gallery displays one-of-a-kind artwork and a unique atmosphere. Boutique hotels, modern hostels, and ancient five star hotels are all here, and the dining and entertainment scene is unparalleled.
