City Breaks in April

Easter can be a wonderful time to travel to many European and other destinations. Countries where there is a history of Catholicism and Christianity tend to have a wide variety of holiday traditions that can make a holiday at this time of year both a spiritual and a cultural delight. Don't worry, however, if you want to avoid the religious festivities as there are many other destinations you can go to relax and enjoy the onset of summer.

Cities like Madrid and Rome are particularly special if you are seeking out a cultural city break with an emphasis on the tradition of the Easter holiday. Make your way through the Semana Santa festivities in April and you will find the cultural practices of many of Madrid's Churches are in full swing with a series of processions, gatherings and rites. Particularly spectacular is the Tamborada del Domingo de Resurreccion during which a brotherhood from one of Madrid's Churches beats out a city shuddering rhythm on a set of drums assembled in the Plaza Mayor.

Rome is, not surprisingly, thriving with visitors in Easter with a spectacular array of religious and other curious travellers. The celebration of Mass in St Peter's Square is of particular significance to many of the tourists who come to Rome at this time, and even for the non-religious can be an intensely spiritual experience. If you crowd in with the throngs you'll be able to witness one of the largest gatherings of pilgrims in the European continent. It will certainly add a different dimension to a city break. Otherwise just wandering through the crowded gatherers at many of Rome's most famous sites will be an enchanting and at times surreal experience.

For something a little different try a relaxing spa retreat in Edinburgh. Edinburgh is one of the UKs most spectacular cities, built, as it is, around the castle at its centre. You'll be able to enjoy a three or four star retreat with the added benefit of enjoying a romantic city with a difference. A spa retreat can be a great way to unwind whilst touring the sights and whiskey sellers of Edinburgh.
