Czech Republic City Breaks

A guide to the Czech Republic

As the Czech Republic’s capital and the country’s largest city, Prague is naturally a great choice for a city break. It’s easy to see why Prague is one of Eastern and Central Europe’s most popular destinations too; with its stunning architecture and thriving atmosphere, many visitors return several times to take in all that the city has to offer. Highlights include the picturesque Old Town and Old Town Square, the bustling Charles Bridge and striking Prague Castle, and walks through the winding streets are perfect for soaking in the life of the city, and frequent relaxed cafe stops. Getting to Prague from the UK is particularly convenient, with many budget airlines offering cheap flights from a number of regional airports, making it a hassle-free choice for a weekend trip.

Choice of attractive cities

Outside of Prague, there are several smaller cities in the Czech Republic that are worth considering for those looking to escape the tourist hordes. Brno, in the south-east, is the Czech Republic’s second largest city and boasts much of the same grandeur as Prague, with less of the crowds. Or try the relaxed atmosphere of Pilsen to the west, offering typical Bohemian architecture and the Gothic St Bartholomew’s Cathedral, as well as plenty of the internationally popular local Pilsener Beer. The city of Budweis in the south is also well-known for its local brew – Budweiser. If you’re planning a city break to one of these destinations, then a slightly longer short break of 3-5 days is advisable, as the easiest way to reach your city is likely to be through Prague.

Year-round destination

The Czech Republic is a great option for a quick getaway throughout the year. Summers are generally hot and sunny, due to its landlocked location in central Europe, making the peak season months perfect for those in search of a dose of European sunshine, as well as all the culture and buzz of a city break. The cold winters offer a completely different insight into the country and its traditions, with snow-topped fairytale buildings providing a stunning backdrop for a Christmas break in Prague, and the chance to visit the city's dazzling winter markets.
