Edinburgh weather - Expect the unexpected!
While few visitors expect to have good weather in Scotland, the Edinburgh climate is not normally as bad as people think! Edinburgh weather is very similar to the north of England, and yearly average temperatures in Edinburgh are not a great deal lower than London. Whenever you visit Edinburgh the weather is likely to be changeable. That means a rainy start may well turn into glorious sunshine or vice versa. Edinburgh summer weather is just as unpredictable as the rest of the year but there are long days of sunshine and averages of around 20º in June, July and August. Summer temperatures can go considerably higher.
Edinburgh weather - Spring and autumn for less tourists
Many residents feel spring is the best time to visit Edinburgh. Temperatures are fine for sightseeing and the afternoons often tend to be sunny after a chilly start. There are far fewer tourists outside the summer months. Another good time to visit Edinburgh is September and October. Edinburgh is delightfully tourist free in the autumn and temperatures remain mild. Our average weather chart for Edinburgh shows quite reasonable temperatures and plenty of sunshine between May and October. Average sunshine hours in Edinburgh are surprisingly just as good in April and October as in July and August. The sunniest months in Edinburgh are May and June. It can rain at any time in Edinburgh so be prepared. February, March and April are considerably drier than the summer.
Edinburgh weather - Winter atmosphere
Average winter temperatures are cold but snow is rare. Cold and misty winter weather makes the city especially atmospheric and bad weather at any time of year is highly conducive to enjoying Edinburgh’s fine pubs, cosy cafes and tea rooms! Average Edinburgh temperatures hover around 5º in December, January and February. Extremely cold days are rare. The worst aspect of the weather in Edinburgh is the north or east wind which can make the weather feel colder than it really is. However, the best winter days enjoy atmospheric frosty mornings and wonderfully crisp invigorating sunshine.
