A guide to Scotland

Scotland is a fantastic weekend destination, with a number of striking Scottish cities to choose from, all brimming with individual character and telling their own fascinating histories. With an ancient past stretching back for many thousands of years, Scotland boasts some of the oldest cities in Europe, and is home to grand architecture, imposing castles and a unique Scottish culture. With excellent transport links to the rest of the UK and major airports operating both national and international flights, Scotland is a convenient choice for a weekend, and can be a great affordable short break option.

History and culture in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is certainly one of Scotland’s most popular destinations, with its diverse collection of historic attractions, cultural events and entertainment. The city skyline is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, an iconic sight perched atop an extinct volcano in the centre of the city, and surrounded by the winding streets and historic architecture of the Old Town to one side, and the majestic Georgian buildings of the New Town to the other. Stroll down the Royal Mile, where you can learn about Scottish Whiskey heritage, visit a tartan factory and purchase your very own local cashmere, as well as sample some traditional Scottish fare in one of the many friendly restaurants and pubs. If you make it to the bottom of the Mile, you’ll be greeted by two of Scotland’s most prestigious buildings, the attractive Holyrood Palace, summer residence to the Queen and the modern Scottish Parliament, both looked over by the nearby Arthur’s Seat.

From Glasgow, to Dundee and Aberdeen

Glasgow is another great choice, brimming with local culture and hosting a never-ending schedule of arts, music and entertainment events throughout the year. The National Theatre of Scotland, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the Centre for Contemporary Arts comprise just some of the major cultural venues across the city, while the Glasgow music scene has become internationally renowned earning it the title of UNESCO City of Music in recent years. Other destinations heading progressively further north include Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness, which are all surrounded by the dramatic Scottish Highlands and home to their own intriguing rich histories.
