Greece City Breaks

A guide to Greece

Greece is well-known as a fantastic beach holiday destination, with its extensive sandy coastlines and idyllic island retreats. However, if you’re in search of a quick city break in the sun, then Greece could be just the place, with a wealth of cultural and historic sights, and spectacular natural scenery within easy reach. With an ever-increasing number of cheap flights to Greece from airports across the UK, short breaks in Greece may well be cheaper and more convenient than you imagine.

Cultural getaways to Athens

The Greek capital Athens is the most popular city break destination in Greece, attracting a regular flow of tourists throughout the year. Spectacular ancient buildings and monuments such as the Acropolis, the Roman Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are the major attractions here, making it the perfect choice for those in search of some ancient Greek history. Archaeological museums and on-going excavations bring the ancient past to life, while many will enjoy simply strolling through the streets and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere and plentiful sun. Athens is also a thriving commercial centre, with excellent shopping, a wide range of traditional Greek and international dining, and entertainment available to fill the days and nights.

Ancient sights and sandy beaches

Outside of Athens there are a number of alternative destinations in Greece for a quick getaway. Coastal breaks are a great choice for combining the buzz of a city with a good dose of sun, sea and sand, and Greece offers several enticing options. Thessaloniki, situated on the Aegean coast in the north-east, is Greece’s second largest city and enjoys many historic and cultural attractions, including several UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The added bonus of fewer crowds, access to a large number of nearby beaches and coves, and an airport just outside the city makes this a great option. Alternatively, head to Corfu city on the island of Corfu, surrounded by the tranquil Ionian Sea, for a short break in the picturesque Old Town, with plenty of sandy beaches nearby.
