Hong Kong Getting Around
An Ultra Modern Efficient Underground System
Each day there are over 11 million passenger journeys made on Hong Kong public transport which copes exceedingly well with a modern and efficient system. Getting around Hong Kong on foot is easy within the Kowloon tourist district as there are many attractions and shopping centres within easy walking distance, however humidity can be a problem. The MTR metro system is the easiest form of transport with frequent services to all areas and is efficient and cheap. Day and weekly passes are available and its coverage extends to the Disney theme park, Hong Kong Island and the New Territories.
Clean and Green Taxis
There are literally hundreds of bus routes to all over the Hong Kong region, including throughout the many offshore islands. Within the heavily built up Kowloon area, the MRT is however a better option due to road congestion, but Hong Kong buses offer the most cost effective way to see the countryside and beaches. Taxis are the most convenient way of travel in Hong Kong and there is no shortage of taxis for hire especially in Kowloon and Central. All vehicles run on low emission LPG fuel and can be hailed by the roadside or at designated taxi ranks.
Boats and Cruises
Ferry travel is an essential component of Hong Kong public transport with numerous outlying islands and 11 different operators run inter island services, harbour cruises, to Macau and the Chinese mainland. A Hong Kong harbour pleasure cruise is a must during a Hong Kong short break, offering amazing views and cityscape scenery. Perhaps the most enjoyable way of getting around in Hong Kong is to take a traditional tram which operates several lines on the north side of Hong Kong Island. Running since 1904, these charming double-decker vintage trams are a marvellously romantic way to see the many attractions the city has to offer.
