Lisbon Things To Do
Baixa
One of the most popular sightseeing activities on a Lisbon city break is a trip to the Pombaline Lower Town, or Baixa. The grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio – between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle – extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailors and cafes. Ideal for shopping, the street names help you find what you’re looking for: Prata (Silver) Street, Ouro (Gold) Street and Ferreiros (Blacksmiths) Street are just a few examples.
Belém
Alongside the Tagus River is the historic neighborhood of Belém. A beautiful example of Manueline architecture, the grand Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is situated here and took 70 years to complete after construction started in 1501. The monastery cost the equivalent of 70 kg of gold each year and most of the construction costs were financed through the spice trade.
Monuments
Restauradores Square; Elevador de Santa Justa, a lift in Gothic revival style, built around 1900 to connect the Baixa and Bairro Alto, The Castle of São Jorge, atop the tallest hill of the central city; Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) with the beautiful façade of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha nearby are just a handful of the stunning monuments in this beautiful city.
Architecture
Lisbon is rich in architecture; Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Traditional Portuguese, Modern and Post-Modern constructions can be found all over the city.
Outdoors
The Arrábida Mountains – 35 km of limestone mountains with a wonderful coastline – are located between Setúbal and Sesimbra. Declared a National Park in 1976 to protect the many species here, walking through these mountains is an unforgettable experience. At the Portinho da Arrábida and Galapos beaches – the best in the region – discover blue sea and an excellent selection of fresh fish and seafood.
