Malta Things To Do
Forts and Castles
The varied and colourful history of Malta can be seen in its immense collection of imposing fortresses, castles and fortified harbours. Impressive structures still remain from the era of medieval knights, marauding Arab armies and even Phoenician settlers. Step back in time for an inspiring and educational visit that will bring to life ancient Maltese life along with wonderful panoramic views of countryside and coastline.
Beaches
Although not blessed with an abundance of pristine sweeping sandy beaches, Malta does have some lovely bays and secluded coves to indulge in a day of relaxed sunbathing and swimming. Among the most picturesque are St Paul’s Bay and the aptly named Golden Bay. Fine, soft sand and crystal clear waters offer great fun for families and provide ample opportunity for exciting water sports and beach activities.
Caves and Catacombs
Malta can boast a multitude of intriguing underground burial chambers and caves that paint an atmospheric picture of very early Maltese history. Visit expansive catacombs dating from the 1st - 8th centuries or explore the Caves of Darkness, containing traces of human and mammal life from over 180,000 years ago. A definite must see and rightly popular with visitors is a trip to the sea caves of the Blue Grotto.
Churches
A close knit catholic community, Malta has several hundred churches and cathedrals that can be visited that incorporate every possible architectural style. Romanesque, baroque, medieval and Moorish designs can be admired and many are in fact famous tourist attractions in their own right. The 'silent' city of Mdina is a must see - a walled medieval compound free of noise and traffic with an impressive cathedral as its centrepiece.
Powerboat Cruises
Great fun and exhilaration awaits with a day on the ocean on board a powerboat as you are whisked around the coastline at high speed. Find yourself in a picturesque secluded bay for lunch and a spot of snorkelling and enjoy some deep sea fishing while exploring a stunningly rugged coastline. A great adrenaline rush and perfect fun for groups of friends.
Museums
A city break in Malta cannot escape its colourful heritage that covers almost every era since early civilisation. With an impressive range of museums to choose from in Valetta and elsewhere, visitors can relive the great events that have shaped the island's history. Discover archaeology from the earliest Neolithic settlers, Roman and Greek antiquities, maritime and wartime history and exhibits from the natural world. A trip to a Malta museum will provide inspiration and something to interest all visitors.
