Netherlands City Breaks

A guide to Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the most popular destinations for a city break from the UK, with convenient cheap flights operating from many UK airports. Probably the most beloved and easily accessible is Amsterdam, famous for being one of Europe’s most liberal and diverse cities. Amsterdam is also a picturesque capital with an extensive network of UNESCO World Heritage-listed canals criss-crossing the city, allowing for relaxing canal boat rides or strolls along the many canal paths. Art and history abound too, with attractions such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House making Amsterdam an excellent choice for culture-lovers in Europe. Hire a bike in the capital for a unique and popular way to see the sights, and experience Amsterdam like a local.

Beloved major cities, offering culture and charm

Situated to the south of Amsterdam, The Hague is another popular choice. An eclectic mix of traditional and modern architecture marks out The Hague’s striking skyline, while its location on the North Sea provides a serene backdrop, with two distinct beach resorts popular with locals and visitors alike. Nearby Rotterdam is the second largest city after Amsterdam, offering a vibrant selection of culture and entertainment, and as the largest port in Europe, home to a thriving international community.

More unique destinations

For those in search of something a little off the beaten track, the Netherlands is also home to a number of smaller destinations. Beautiful Utrecht is centred around the striking Dom Tower, and here you can enjoy a wealth of cultural attractions, including nine major museums and a selection of arts and music venues. Alternatively, the university city of Tilburg is worth a visit in July to experience the city’s 10-day long fun fair, one of many annual festivals and events. If you’re considering one of these destinations, you may want to think about extending your weekend by a few days to allow time to travel, as most flights, especially those operated by the budget airlines, will only fly to the major cities in the Netherlands, from where you can easily catch a train to your chosen city.
