Getting around Reykjavik
Reykjavik is a very small capital. Getting around Reykjavik is straightforward. Most visitors will be happy to explore the city on foot. The Reykjavik Card covers unlimited transport on all Reykjavik buses. One-day, two-day and three-day passes are available from tourist offices, the Town Hall, the central bus station and many hotels and attractions. The card also offers free entry to museums, galleries and geothermal swimming pools.
Getting to/from Reykjavik Airport
A Flybus service connects Reykjavik Airport with the city centre. A taxi will take about 30 minutes.
Walking
Reykjavik city breaks are easy to explore on foot. People are helpful and often speak English. Ask at the tourist office for information and maps for self-guided walks in Reykjavik. The routes are signposted. Several companies offer longer walking trips outside the city.
Bus
The Reykjavik bus service operates over 30 routes in the city. Buses run from 07.00 to 24.00 (buses start at 10.00 Sundays). A minimal night bus service operates at the weekend. There are 2 main bus stations: Hlemmur and Laekjartorg. There is a flat fare. Pay the driver with the correct fare. If you want to change buses ask the driver for a transfer ticket (skiptimidi) which is valid for 45 minutes. 10-ticket passes are available from bus stations. Public buses visit many of the natural sights around Reykjavik but it may be more convenient to take an organised tour.
Taxi
Reykjavik taxis are expensive. Taxis can be hailed in the street or booked by phone. Taxis are metered. A tip is not expected.
Bicycle
Cycling is a good way of getting around Reykjavik. The city is flat
Car hire
Hiring a car in Reykjavik is extremely expensive.
Reykjavik sightseeing tours
There is amazing scenery very close to the city. Several companies offer Reykjavik bus tours, longer excursions to explore glaciers and geysers, and whale watching trips. Exciting longer tours into stunning Icelandic landscapes use 4x4 vehicles, white water rafts, snow-scooters and trucks. Whale-watching tours and short horse riding tours are offered in the summer months. You can also see Reykjavik, the mountains and the glaciers from the air.
