Riga Getting Around

Getting around Riga
With the vast majority of city sights in the compact Old Town, there is very little need for Riga public transport. Getting around Riga is a pleasure on foot. Economical, efficient public transport consists of buses, trams, trolleybuses and minibuses. The Riga Card for tourists allows unlimited free travel on trolleybuses, buses and trams, plus free entry to museums and tours.

Getting to/from Riga airport
Getting from Riga airport is simple. The airport is just 5 miles from the city. Regular buses run to Riga central bus station. Buy tickets onboard. The journey takes 20-30 minutes. A taxi will take about 15 minutes.

Walking
On a Riga city break, walking in the Old Town is a constant delight. All the major sights are easily reached on foot. Several companies offer Riga guided walking tours.

Bus/Tram/Trolleybus
Riga buses are extremely cheap. Buy flat fare tickets onboard. Tickets are not interchangeable on each mode of transport. Small minibuses run on central city routes. Riga transport runs from 06.00 to 24.00. A limited night service operates.

Taxi
Riga taxis are cheap by UK standards. Useful for trips right across town, for getting home at night, or for visiting the coast. Taxis should be metered and licensed. Easy to hail on the street or outside major hotels. Surcharge for bags. Tip of 10% expected. Taxis can be pre-booked by phone. If you take an “unofficial” taxi, agree the fare beforehand and use your common sense.

Train
Regular trains depart from the main train station for Jurmala if you want to go to the beach.

Riga sightseeing tours
Several companies offer Riga sightseeing tours by bus. River cruises on the Daugava River. Horse-drawn carriage tours from the Hotel de Rome.
