The iconic statue known as Christ the Redeemer is a true Brazil icon and Rio's most popular attraction. Trains ascend the Carcovado hill every 20 minutes for sublime views of the city and ocean. Adult prices start at R36 and it is open until 6.30pm each day. Mondays is the best time as there are much fewer visitors.

Shops in general are open Mondays to Saturdays from 8am until 9pm with an extended lunch break from midday until 2pm. There are many convenience stores open around the clock especially in the main nightlife districts and throughout the city during the Rio carnival. Sundays see the vast majority of businesses closed.

Tipping & Etiquette in Rio de Janeiro
Most eateries already mark up bills with a 10% service charge and no further tipping is expected. Gratuities are usually shared out equally among restaurant staff.
