Switzerland City Breaks
A guide to Switzerland
Switzerland offer something for everyone, with elegant architecture, stunning natural scenery and international shopping and cuisine, all available in abundance throughout the country. Zurich and Geneva are cosmopolitan cities, great for shopping and sightseeing, whilst the shores of Lake Geneva provide the ideal setting for exhilarating activities, surrounded by the dramatic mountain scenery of the Swiss Alps. With its temperate inland climate, Switzerland is a great option for short trips during the summer months when the weather is at warmest and the Swiss cities come alive with colour. Visiting throughout the rest of the year allows you to enjoy the varied seasons and changing scenery.
Elegant Zurich, charming sights and shopping
Zurich is one of Switzerland’s most popular city break destinations, attracting a regular flow of visitors to its many cultural attractions throughout the year. As Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich is home to many of its most famous sights, such as the impressive Romanesque Grossmunster, the attractive Munsterhof Square, with its medley of architectural gems, and St. Peter's Church, boasting the largest clock face in the world. Over 150 museums and art galleries are on offer for culture-vultures, including the Swiss National Museum and the Rietberg Museum, and the city’s many parks and green spaces provide the perfect place to relax. A superb selection of international restaurants, bars and bustling weekend markets all add to the colour and enjoyment of the city.
Escape to stunning Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps
For those looking to combine stunning nature and a cosmopolitan buzz, Lake Geneva is a great choice. Geneva itself, situated at the far western end of the lake, is a prime location, with excellent accommodation and dining options. The city is well-known as an international centre for business and diplomacy, and the 82 listed Heritage Sites of National Significance scattered across the city incorporate a cross-section of Geneva’s most famous political and cultural buildings, including many museums and historical monuments. For a slower-paced trip, try Lausanne or Montreux, both situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, with both cities offering the perfect base for exploring the lake and the nearby Swiss Alps.
