Wales City Breaks
A guide to Wales
Wales is perfect for those in search of a short trip in the UK which won’t break the bank, and with a superb selection of striking cities to choose from, there is sure to be something for everyone. And with the dramatic Welsh coastline, visitors have the unique opportunity to experience wild nature, combined with all the fun and convenience of a bustling city. Weekend trips are easy to get to too, with good connections across the country by rail and several airports operating both domestic and international flights, making Wales an excellent alternative to many other destinations further afield.
Cardiff, great culture, sights and nightlife
Cardiff, the country’s capital and most populated city, is the natural choice for a weekend away. The country’s cultural and economic hub provides both historic or cultural attractions, and can fit the bill if you are looking to either relax entirely, or take in some of the city’s nightlife and entertainment. Major historic landmarks include Cardiff Castle and the City Halls, whilst a selection of museums and galleries will keep culture-vultures occupied for several days. Cardiff is also a great choice for those in search of a great shopping, with the bustling Queen’s Street and St. Mary Street offering you plenty of places for retail therapy. Finally, for those looking to soak up some sporting action, the city is home to the 74,500 seat Millennium Stadium and the Welsh home of Rugby Union, Cardiff Arms Park.
Exploring the Welsh coastline
If you’re looking for a destination in Wales outside of Cardiff, then why not try one of the nearby coastal cities of Newport or Swansea? Newport is situated just 12 miles east of Cardiff along the Bristol Channel, and located on the banks of the River Usk. The city is home to an attractive array of Victorian architecture, including the Newport and Market Arcades, and provides a network of shops and restaurants. The Newport Transporter Bridge is one of the city’s most iconic features and one of only a handful of working bridges of its type in the world. Swansea, to the west of Cardiff is another appealing destination in Wales, with a range of cultural venues such as the Victorian Grand Theatre attracting regular arts and drama events. The nearby coastline offers a selection of stunning sandy beaches and hidden coves for those looking to explore the great outdoors.
