Germany City Breaks
A guide to Germany
Germany has so many exciting cities to choose from, it might be hard to pick just one. If you’re planning a trip, then there are plenty of cheap flights on offer from budget airlines in the UK, making German cities both convenient and affordable. The capital Berlin, as well as Cologne, Munich and Hamburg are just some of the more popular destinations, and alternatively, you can head to smaller cities such as Bonn or Heidelberg for a more unusual trip.
Explore vibrant youthful cities
North-east Germany is home to Berlin, one of the country's most popular city break destinations. This thriving European capital is well-known for its vibrant, youthful culture and recent historical events making it a good choice for those both in search of a lively base, and anyone looking to learn more about Germany’s culture and past. The famous Berlin Wall and iconic Brandenburg Gate are just two of the key monuments for visitors. Other cities in the north include Hamburg and Hannover, both offering a good insight into the local region and culture. Cologne, in the west, and the nearby smaller university city of Bonn are also good options, and can be reached by rail from the UK with fast connections from Eurostar terminals.
Rich culture, proud heritage
Southern Germany offers a whole different side to the country, and those visiting cities in Bavaria such as Munich and Nuremburg will be immersed in a proudly independent culture, with unique dialect and customs. Munich is a beautiful city with a rich history and attractive architecture, famous for its expansive beer halls and hosting of the international beer festival, Oktoberfest. Other destinations include the small picturesque city of Heidelberg, boasting one of the oldest universities in Europe, and the bohemian city of Freiburg located at the edge of the Black Forest.
