Getting around Bilbao
Most city break visitors to Bilbao will be content to walk around the vast majority of the city. An efficient modern spacious metro is ideal for longer trips out to the suburbs and the coast. Trams are excellent for The Billboard allows travel on public transport plus discounts at museums, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Available from the airport, tourist offices and some hotels.

Getting to/from Bilbao airport.
Bilbao International Airport is just 8 miles from the city. Regular airport buses from 06.00 to 24.00. A taxi to Bilbao airport will take about 20 minutes.

Walking
Most visitors will be happy to walk around central Bilbao. The old part of the city is an interesting area to walk. Bilbao’s vast regeneration project has made the river a pleasure for walking. The Guggenheim Museum is a pleasant 15 minute riverside walk from the old centre. City suburbs like are also fascinating areas for walking. Join Bilbao residents for a relaxed stroll in the early evening.

Metro
Bilbao metro was only opened in 1995. The Norman Foster designed glass and steel metro entrances have become a well-known feature of the urban landscape. The metro is exceptionally light and airy. Trains run until around 24.00 during the week, until 02.00 on Fridays, and all night on Saturdays. A single ticket is cheap but a day pass will save money if you intend to make 3 or more trips in one day. The metro now runs as far as the interesting river suburb of Portugalete.

Tram
Bilbao trams are particularly useful for a city break visitor. They run from around 07.00 until 23.00. Bilbao trams are useful for visiting the Arriaga Theatre, the Guggenheim Museum and the Euskalduna Palace and the San Mamés Football Stadium.

Bus
Bilbao buses cover the entire city and run from around 06.30 to 23.00. With such an efficient metro and trams there is little need for most visitors to use Bilbao buses. Night buses run until 02.00 on Fridays and all night on Saturdays.

Taxi
Bilbao taxis can be hailed on the street and are easily found. Like cities like Madrid, Seville and Valencia, Bilbao taxis are relatively economical.

Bicycle
Cycling is popular in Bilbao. The city has bicycle lanes. The riverside area is excellent for bicycles.

Funicular & lifts
The funicular de Artxanda connects the Plaza del Funicular by the Paseo del Campo Volantín, with Artxanda Mountain. Good views of the city and the river. There are free lifts at some of the cities bridges.

Hanging Bridge
If you travel out to Portugalete don’t miss the unique hanging bridge river crossing to Getxo. You can return on the tiny ferry across the river for a few cents.
