Denmark City Breaks
A guide to Denmark
Denmark is an exciting option for a city break, with the capital Copenhagen, as well as a number of the country’s smaller cities, attracting a regular flow of visitors in search of a relaxing or cultural destination. As the most southerly of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark is a great choice for a short break throughout the year, as it offers a more temperate climate than its northerly neighbours, with temperatures ranging between an average of 0C in the winter and 16C through the warmer summer months. There is plenty of variety across the country too, ensuring something for everyone, and nature lovers and culture-vultures alike will be awed by the country’s enticing blend of spectacular natural scenery and cultural heritage.
Eclectic and colourful Copenhagen
Copenhagen is Denmark’s most popular city break destination and, with its superb selection of cultural and historical attractions as well as relaxed atmosphere, it’s easy to see why the Danish capital attracts so much attention. Walking through the city, you can’t fail to be impressed by the eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary architecture across the city’s diverse districts, and buildings such as the Marble Church and the Metropolis Building are truly eye-catching. Museums and arts venues abound with major attractions, such as the National Museum and National Gallery, containing a wealth of Danish gems, whilst a diverse mix of street entertainment can be found on a stroll along the vibrant Stroget. As an important centre for jazz music, Copenhagen also has a host of fantastic music bars and venues.
Ideal for nature lovers
As well as the lively cultural scene, Copenhagen is also a superb choice for those in search of an appealing blend of nature and urban life on their city break. Its location on the eastern shore of the island of Zealand, and the neighbouring island of Amager, gives it a unique feel, with water an ever-present calming feature throughout the city. Copenhagen also boasts over 8km of sandy shoreline within a short bike or bus ride from the city centre, making it easy to escape the hustle and bustle for a day or afternoon. The city is also home to a large number of parks and green spaces including King’s Garden, the garden of Rosenborg Castle and the Botanical Gardens, with its delicate collection of glasshouses.
