Copenhagen City Breaks
A guide to Copenhagen
A visit to Copenhagen is guaranteed to enchant all ages with its fairytale history and olde worlde charm. It is a compact city filled with quaint history, matched by its picturesque location nestling between Langeline harbour and pretty Nyhavn Canal. Visitors will uncover a colourful history dating back to the Vikings, and find a wealth of museums and galleries. The true symbol of the city is the charming statue of the Little Mermaid, which can be seen basking in front of the harbour, and is a must see during a leisurely cruise along the waterfront. The Danish capital is filled with royal palaces, such as the ornate Princes Palace, which houses the National Museum, and Christiansborg Palace, a dreamy romantic stately home, that could easily have come from the imagination of Hans Christian Andersen himself.
Colourful and stylish art and architecture
The city is one of the cleanest and greenest in Europe, and small enough to explore easily on foot or by bicycle. The historic Nyhavn Canal area is the ideal starting point and features colourful traditional timber houses, a bustling market and plenty of romantic waterfront cafes. It is also Copenhagen's most vibrant district after dark, with a multitude of bars, jazz clubs and late night eateries. From here, the National Gallery and Museum of Decorative Arts are just a hop away and highlight the city's artistic heritage since medieval times. It also showcases eloquently the very finest examples of contemporary Scandinavian design.
Magical sights and fun days out
There is no denying the appeal of Copenhagen for the whole family, thanks to the many fun filled attractions and enchanting history. An absolute must is the original Legoland theme park at Billund, which is sure to thrill youngsters and nostalgic parents alike. Next stop should definitely be the world famous Tivoli Gardens, for the unrelenting fun of its amusement theme park and acres of serene landscaped gardens. For a total change of scenery head to magical Elsinore Castle, immortalised in Shakespeare's Hamlet, for a day of drama, intrigue and romantic history. Longer trips can enjoy a day out from the city with a short leisurely cruise to Sweden, and the attractive ports of Lund and Malmo invitingly close.
