Estonia City Breaks
A guide to Estonia
Estonia is an up-and-coming short break destination in Europe, offering the chance to explore one of the many picturesque cities of the Baltic States, on a unique city break. Estonia is perfect for cultural and historic getaways, and is also a good option for anyone keen to combine spectacular natural scenery with the buzz and convenience of a city. With regular cheap flights to the Estonian capital, Tallinn, available on many of the UK budget airlines, Estonia may also be less expensive and easier than you think. Great value accommodation, food and entertainment make the country a particularly budget-friendly option.
Unique, budget-friendly destination
Tallinn’s status as a European Capital of Culture gives a good indication of the city’s rich scene, with a range of music and theatre venues and a selection of over 20 art galleries, including the Art Museum of Estonia. Likewise, the two stunning Old Town districts in Tallinn are listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and a stroll through the winding streets or a visit to the impressive Toompea Castle is a great way to learn more about the city's historic past. Other cultural highlights in Tallinn include the striking Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the exquisitely preserved Raekoja plats and the medieval Dome Church, which is home to a fascinating display of over 100 coats of arms.
Cultural haven, idyllic natural beauty
As well as the many cultural highlights that Tallinn has to offer, the city is also ideally positioned for enjoying some of Estonia’s beautiful natural scenery. Situated on the north-western coast of the country, Tallinn enjoys the calming influence of the nearby sea and the coastal district of Pirita is the best place to get close to the water, with an attractive marina and the opportunity to hire boats along the gentle Pirita River. Tallinn is also built around several lakes, and is home to many green spaces including the expansive Botanic Garden. The Estonian Open Air Museum, located just west of Tallinn, is another interesting way to learn more about Estonia’s rural landscape, and is ideal for spending the day outside during the pleasant summer months.
