Florence Things To Do

Art
Florence is simple a paradise for art lovers. There are so many galleries and museums you would need several weekend trips to see just the most important collections, not to mention the Renaissance treasures contained in the city’s amazing churches and palaces! Try to have clear objectives and be selective or you may become overloaded and exhausted. The vast Uffizi museum is essential for the Renaissance masters, and the Palatina museum for Raphael and Titian. The Bargello and the Duomo museum are a must for sculptures. Stunning art treasures in churches like Santissima Annunziata, San Marco and Santa Maria del Carmine. And of course, Michelangelo’s David in the Academia.

The Duomo
Conceived as the largest Catholic church in the World, Florence’s mighty cathedral still astounds with its intricate exterior and vast spacious interior. Highlights include the astonishing 7th century baptistery, the amazing 14th century south door and the art treasures of the museum. The Piazza del Duomo provides stunning views of the cathedral dome and is a natural focal point in Florence.

Churches
Wherever you look there seems to be an astonishing church in Florence. An entire weekend break in Florence could be spent touring the city’s churches to admire beautiful interiors and yet more Renaissance art treasures. Churches like San Miniato al Monte are dazzling from the outside, while the interiors of San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito and Cappella dei Pazzi are triumphs of the Renaissance.

Ponte Vecchio
The city’s most famous bridge was built in the 14th century and is famous for its jewellery shops. Cross the River Arno to visit Palazzo Pitti, Florence’s largest palace, and the string of galleries and museums in the vicinity. The extraordinary formal gardens of Giardino di Boboli are a good spot for a picnic and for escaping those towering medieval streets.

Markets
The bustle and character of Florence markets make a nice change from the city’s endless churches, museums and galleries. Top food markets include the 19th century Mercato Centrale, the always entertaining Mercato Sant Ambrogio, and the busy Mercato Nuovo. The former is Europe’s largest covered market and has great authentic bars. Piazzo dei Ciompi is home to a famous street market.
