Genoa Getting Around
Getting Around Genoa
The best way of getting around on a Genoa city break is by foot. Genoa is quite an easy city in which to orientate yourself. Public transport consists of buses, trains, a limited metro and a few lifts and funiculars. The same tickets are valid for buses and trains. Note that admission tickets for one attraction may be valid for other attractions nearby. A 3 day Genoa Museum Card includes admission to most museums. A 1 day card includes public transport.
Getting From Genoa airport
Genoa Airport is northwest of the city centre. Getting to Genoa airport is straightforward. The Genoa airport bus departs every 30 minutes from around 06.00 to 24.00.
Walking
Walking is by far the most rewarding way of seeing the historic centre of Genoa. Most cars are banned from the oldest parts of the city. Ask at tourist offices about individual and group guided walking tours in Genoa.
Bus
The best way of getting around Genoa if you do not wish to walk. Genoa buses cover most of the city and run along the coast. A flat fare ticket is valid for an hour and a half and can be used on the metro. Buy tickets from newsagents and selected shops. One day tickets are available.
Funicular
3 funicular railways climb some of the steepest hills in the city: Sant'Anna runs from Piazza Portello to Corso Magenta; Zecca-Righi runs from Largo della Zecca up the length of Righi hill; the third runs from Piazza del Principe to Granarolo.
Genoa Sightseeing Tours
Genoa sightseeing buses depart from Piazza Caricamento and tour the top city sights. Genoa is a hilly city so bus tours can save a lot of tiring footwork in the summer if you wish to see the upper parts of the city.
Boat Trips
Genoa boat tours of the harbour and old port leave from the aquarium pier and last about an hour.
Taxi
Taxis are easy to find but are unable to reach many of the oldest areas of the city of interest to tourists. Order a taxi by phone for important journeys.
Train & Metro
Stazione Principe is above the port in the west, and Stazione Brignole is on Piazza Verdi in the east. The Genoa metro consists of just one line of little use to visitors.
Car hire
Car hire is only an option if you are planning a longer trip. The surrounding hills and coastline are noted for their beauty. A car in the city centre is a potential nightmare.
