Ghent City Breaks
A guide to Ghent
Medieval Ghent offers a history as interesting and varied as any city in Europe and a reputation for stunning architecture, with the landscape dominated by its three famous towers - St Bavo's Cathedral, the Belfry and the church of St Nicholas. Flanders largest university town, Ghent boasts a great blend of the contemporary and the traditional, and offers a unique alternative to other larger Belgium cities, with plenty to see and do.
Medieval city centre, full of Flemish charm
Part of its charm is that you can walk along so many small streets and cobbled pathways and experience the old Dutch style that is so synonymous with the city. The Graslei in the old city is one of the most picturesque streets and the canals that run through it are magic for those with a photographic eye, and if you prefer castles, then take a trip to the Gravensteen Castle, with its parapets and mystical air. There are a wealth of museums to visit, too, with paintings, sculpture and antiques from the ages, and some contemporary museums and galleries in the centre, too. Food is a mix of French and Dutch cuisine, however you can find anything you would expect from any international city, and the many welcoming Flemish pubs and tavernas should not be missed.
Tour the historic attractions
Other historic attractions include St Bavo's Cathedral, with its various architectural styles, from gothic to Romanesque, the Belfry, and St Nicholas Church. Don't miss a stroll along the picturesque streets of Korenlei, lined with ornate houses, a horse-drawn carriage ride around St Bavo Square, or a scenic river cruise for wonderful views of the city. Being well-connected to the rest of the country, visits here can also include the chance to visit Brussels and Bruges.
