Hungary City Breaks
A guide to Hungary
Short breaks in Hungary are generally focused on Budapest, the country’s capital. It’s not hard to see why either, with its striking Baroque architecture and vibrant culture. Originally comprised of two cities, Buda and Pest, located either side of the Danube, the river now runs through the one unified city boasting a series of attractive bridges and majestic riverside buildings. Highlights in Budapest include the imposing Hungarian Parliament building, the many museums and galleries and a visit to one of the many city baths. With cheap flights on offer throughout the year, Budapest is a good choice for an affordable and alternative city break from the UK.
Choice of cities to visit
If you’re looking for a more unusual destination, then try heading out of Budapest to one of the several Hungarian cities located in the country’s beautiful countryside. Situated in the southern corner of Hungary on the slopes of the Mecsek Mountains, Pecs is a relaxed and picturesque Hungarian city. With the Christian necropolis listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its recent status as a European capital of culture in 2010, Pecs has plenty of appeal. Gyor in northwest Hungary is another fascinating option, offering traditional colourful architecture and a wealth of local culture from the surrounding region.
Year-round destinations
With its landlocked European climate, Hungary is a great choice for a weekend away throughout the year, with the varying seasons offering very different types of experiences. The summer months are hot and sunny in Hungary, allowing for sitting outside in cafes and pleasant wandering through the streets, as well as giving one of the outdoor baths in Budapest a go, too. Alternatively, the cold winter months often bring snow to Hungary’s cities, transforming them into fairytale settings, with romantic strolls and and perusing the sparkling Christmas markets popular activities.
