The public transport system of Lyon is one of the most advanced in Europe and consists of an extensive bus system, trams and underground metro line. While not the most user-friendly city for walking sightseers, it does nevertheless have a unique public bicycle service. This allows users to simply pick up and drop off cycles at designated points around the city and is the perfect, ethical way to explore the sights at your leisure. Car hire is available at the airport, bus terminals and in many major hotel front offices, however traffic congestion is usual and diving is not required nor recommended.
Getting Around Lyon - Integrated metro and tram services
There are 4 main metro lines that criss cross the city with no station more than a few minutes walk from all the main points of tourist interest. In addition an even more comprehensive tram system links over 60 stations in the greater Lyon area and cheap day passes are available which are valid on all modes of transport and offer very good value for money. A city break to Lyon should not miss the chance to travel by cable car from Lyon old town metro station up to the basilica or Roman ruins. Purely for the benefit of tourists, it has wonderful views and is a most relaxing journey and offers superb photo opportunities.
Getting Around Lyon - Extensive and reliable bus services
Buses are just as convenient for travelling between the numerous attractions and entertainment facilities in Lyon and certainly many visitors will make use of the frequent express buses that run between the airport and city centre. Operating from early morning right up until midnight at frequent intervals, the journey time is approximately 30 minutes. There are no fewer than 4 mainline rail stations in Lyon and the city is well connected by rail to countless cities in France and across Europe. Day trip possibilities by train include Geneva, just two hours away, Nice and Genoa.
