Getting to/from Marseille Airport
Getting to Marseille Airport is straightforward. An airport shuttle bus links Marseille Airport with the main train station. Buses from Marseille Airport to Marseille St Charles train station take about 25 minutes.
Getting around Marseille
The compact city centre is best explored on foot. Marseille has a good integrated public transport system. Buses and metro will be joined by city trams. Tickets and passes are valid on both buses and metro. Tickets can be bought from shops with a RTM sign. Tickets must be validated before boarding. They are valid for 1 hour. One-day (Carte Journée) and three-day (Carte 3 Jours) passes are available. A City Card allows free entry to all of Marseille museums, the Parc Borely gardens and Château d'If. 1-3 day versions are available from the tourist office.
Walking
Most Marseille city break visitors will be happy to walk around the majority of the city. The narrow streets of the old city are a delight. Themed guided walking tours include local history and art.
Metro
Marseille metro is simple and efficient. There are just 2 lines. Marseille metro runs from 05:00 to 21:00.
Bus
Marseilles buses serve the inner city and link with metro stations. Over 80 routes serve every part of the city. Marseille buses run from 0500 to 2100. Night buses run from 21.00 to 24.00.
Tram
Marseille trams are due to start operating in 2007.
Ferry
Toulouse ferries run across the harbour and to the offshore islands of Isle d'If and the Isles du Frioul.
Train
Petit Train de la Bonne Mère is a small tourist train. Local suburban trains run along the Côte d’Azur.
Taxi
Marseille taxis can be hailed in the street and found at taxi ranks. Taxis can be booked by phone for important journeys. Marseille taxis are metered. A small tip is appreciated but not obligatory.
Marseille sightseeing tours
The tourist office organises guided walking tours of the old city. Marseille sightseeing tours employ open-top buses. Get on and off the bus as you wish. Tours usually take in the Old Port, la Corniche, Stade Vel and the Bonne Mère. You can also do Marseille sightseeing tours by taxi.

A coach service runs to southern Alpine ski holiday resorts from December to April.
