Getting around Oslo
Oslo is quite a small city. Most visitors will be happy to walk most of the time. Oslo public transport is efficient and extensive. Public transport runs from 05.30 to midnight. The network includes buses, trams, underground, trains and ferries. The Oslo Pass offers unlimited travel on Oslo public transport plus free entrance to Oslo museums, free admission to Tøyenbadet and Frognerbadet swimming pools, and discounts in major attractions. The pass comes in one, two and three day versions and is available from tourist information offices, hotels and newsstands.
Getting to/from Oslo Airport
Getting to Oslo Airport is easy. The Airport Express Train connects the airport with Oslo city centre. The journey takes 20 minutes. The train stops at underground stations on its way to Oslo Central station. Trains on the Oslo to Trondheim mainline route stop at Oslo Airport. An airport bus also runs to the city centre in 40 minutes. Oslo airport bus service runs at night.
Walking
The medieval centre of Oslo is compact and very pleasant for relaxed walking. Most of the sights are within easy walking distance of each other. Oslo has a lot of fine parks. The waterfront quays are interesting area to explore on foot. Even Vigeland Park on the outskirts of the city can be reached on foot in an hour. Oslo Sightseeing Tours
Oslo sightseeing tours use buses and boats, or a combination of the two. The shortest Oslo fjord trips last about an hour. Evening cruises in the summer season. Bus
Over 50 Oslo bus routes cover the entire city. Buses are useful for reaching outlying Oslo sights and attractions like Vigeland Park. Buy tickets from the driver.
Tram
Trams are a pleasant way of getting around Oslo. Eight tram routes cover the city and go out to attractions like Vigeland Park.
Underground
The Oslo underground (T-Bane) has just five lines and is easy to use. Buy tickets from station machines.
Train
The train lines to Myrdal and Flåm are among the most spectacular in the world. The trip includes incredible gradients and bends, tunnels, vast waterfalls and snowy mountains. Myrdal station is at 2,841feet! Great walks and skiing are within minutes of Oslo by train.
Ferry
Oslo ferries connect the town hall with Bygdøy peninsula, the location for several Oslo museums. Small Oslo ferries run to the islands in the harbour area. Old steam ships make short fjord tours in the summer season.
Taxis
Oslo taxis can be hailed in the street or found at taxi ranks. Taxis are metered. Oslo taxis can be difficult to find at peak times so order in advance for important trips.
Bicycle
Cycling is quite popular in Oslo.
