The Bygdøy Peninsula
An absolute must. Take a ferry from Oslo city centre to the Bygdøy peninsula for many top Oslo attractions. The Viking Ship Museum is truly extraordinary. The Oseberg ship dates from 800! The wonderfully preserved Gokstad ship is the best preserved. The museum also features skeletons and jewellery from burial chambers. The Kon-Tiki Museum pays homage to Thor Heyerdahl's famous Kon-tiki and Ra II rafts and contains Easter Island statues and a whale shark. You will also find a replica of the first ship to sail the North West Passage, and Frammuseet, the 19th century boat used by Amundsen to sail to the Antarctic. The Norwegian Maritime Museum follows Norway’s rich seafaring tradition from the Vikings to oil platforms. Old steam ships make short fjord tours in the summer season. The Norwegian Folk Museum is one of the biggest open-air museums in Europe. An entire Old Town has been recreated.

Sightseeing
The Akerhus Palace and Fortress dates back to the 13th century. The ancient walls and medieval tower occupy a privileged seafront location. The castle features superb banqueting halls and atmospheric medieval dungeons and passageways. The Resistance Museum in the castle grounds, is a moving tribute to the Norwegian resistance of the Nazi occupation. Take a look inside the waterfront City Hall for its murals. Oslo cathedral hosts regular concerts.

Museums & Galleries
The National Gallery includes works by Picasso, Cezanne, Gauguin and El Greco, and an extensive collection of Norwegian art including 19th-century Romantic paintings and Edvard Munch. The Museum of Applied Art features fashion, costumes, tapestries, furniture and ceramics dating back to the seventh century. He Munch Museum, dedicated to Edvard Munch, also has fine gardens. The Ibsen Museum features the writer’s house.

Attractions
Vigelandsparken is a beautiful park featuring the huge granite, iron and bronze sculptures of Gustav Vigeland. The Holmenkollbakken Ski Museum is simply unique: a fascinating look at the history of skiing at the extraordinary Holmenkollen ski jumping stadium at 1,368ft above sea level. The highlight is the ski jump simulator and the ski jump tower itself. There is also a good restaurant with excellent views. Children will enjoy Oslo Reptile Park

Excursions & Tours
Oslo has the most breathtaking scenery on its doorstep. A short underground, bus or train trip can whisk you to superb locations for walking and skiing. Even the shortest Oslo city break can enjoy a short cruise on the fjords. Train trips to Myrdal (2841 feet!) and Flam are staggeringly beautiful. Full day tours employing boat, bus and train are truly unforgettable, featuring some of the world’s most spectacularly scenic landscapes.
