The Colosseum
The most iconic of all Ancient Rome's attractions, the Colosseum is a must-see whilst here, and this grand and impressive former arena, which dates back to 79AD, remains a true symbol of the city. Tours are available of both the interior, and the exterior only, should the queues be too long.
The Pantheon
The best preserved Ancient Roman building, the Pantheon has changed little since its construction in 126AD, and remains one of the city's main attractions. A former pagan temple and Catholic Church, the Pantheon contains priceless medieval frescoes, art and sculpture, and its sheer scale and complexity makes it perhaps the most influential monuments in history.
The Spanish Steps
The widest and longest staircase in Europe, the Spanish Steps have become another iconic landmark, connecting the elegant Piazzi di Spagna with the Piazza Trinita dei Monti. There are plenty of sights around the steps, and views from the top are amazing.
The Forum
The political and administrative hub of the Roman Empire, the Forum was virtually a self-contained city in itself. Made up of the ruins of numerous arches, pagan temples and basilicas, the most popular sight is the Temple of Vesta, the infamous home of the Vestal Virgins.
Trevi Fountain
The most romantic fountain in the world, the Trevi Fountain boasts timeless elegance and glamour, being immortalized in such films as 'Roman Holiday' and 'La Dolce Vita'. Theatrical in design and with a fantastic setting, the fountain sees many visitors embracing the time-honoured tradition of tossing a coin in the water, to ensure they will return.
The Vatican
The world's smallest state, the Vatican is the centre of the Roman Catholic Church, and is just 14 acres in size, and surrounded completely by Rome on all sides. Unique in every way, from its official language of Latin to its colourful Swiss Guards, a visit here is not to be missed.
Campo dei Fiori
The 'Field of Flowers' is the site of a lively market, and offers a slice of Roman cafe culture. As well as browsing the colourful stalls full of blooms, produce and spices, it is a popular gathering place and displays a true Italian charm.
Piazza Navona
The most attractive of all Rome's city squares, Piazza Navona lies in the heart of the historic quarter, and is known for its distinctive oval shape, thanks to its original use as a gladiatorial arena. The square boasts some elegant baroque fountains, particularly the Fountain of the Four Rivers, and a host of delightful renaissance buildings that overlook the centre.
St.Peter's Basilica
St.Peter's Basilica boasts the largest interior of any Christian church in the world, and is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics everywhere. With its central dome dominating the skyline, and a host of lavish features such as sculptures, paintings and frescoes, there's plenty to admire in this impressive church, with a number of tours available.
The Cappuchin Crypt
The crypt comprises of a series of underground catacombs underneath the Capuchin Church of the Immaculate Conception, where the skeletal remains of over 4,000 Capuchin friars who died between the 16th-19th centuries. Strange, enchanting and quite grotesque, the crypt is one of the more bizarre attractions in Rome.
Food
Popping into Rome cafes is an essential part of a stay here, and do as the Romans do and sample various styles of coffee and tempting cakes and snacks. Some of the most memorable eating experiences are in the most basic-looking places with the simplest paper menu: great pasta and an economical carafe of house wine.
Shopping
Shopping in Rome is one of the few things that might distract you from the monuments, churches, palaces, fountains, cafes and fine food. In the very heart of the Centro Storico, you will find plenty of fascinating small grocery stores, tremendous Italian interior design, some incredible shoe shops and all of the big names in high fashion.
