Bologna Getting Around

Getting from Bologna airport
Bologna Airport is approximately 3.75 miles north-west of the town centre in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, about 125 miles east of Milan.

Walking
Most of the Old Town is off limits to vehicles. Walking is the best way to get around, and most attractions are near the Piazza Maggiore.

Public Transport
The Azienda Trasporti Consorziali Bologna (ATC Bologna Public Transport Authority) runs the public transport system in Bologna. The fleet comprises 900 vehicles, half of which run on urban routes (buses, minibuses, and trolley buses), 150 on suburban routes and the remaining 300 on extra-urban routes.

Buses
City buses are frequent and cheap; tickets can be purchased at booths throughout town. Pick up a bus where you see a red sign saying ATC. There are a number of bus lines that link the most important points of the city, as well as the surrounding area. To travel it is necessary to buy a ticket before boarding – from tobacconist shops, at newspaper stands, at ATC offices or from automatic machines – as they are not sold on the bus. They must be stamped at the beginning of the journey. The central bus station is in Piazza XX Settembre, near the main train station.

Railway
The first Bologna Centrale station was constructed in 1864. A new station was built ten years later on the same grounds, designed and built by architect Gaetano Ratti. It is the fifth largest station – in terms of passenger traffic – in Italy and is a principal railway junction.

Taxis
Do not pick up a taxi on the street without calling ahead (CAT – Consorzio Autonomo Taxisti).
