Bologna City Breaks
A guide to Bologna
Bologna remains one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe; a wonderfully romantic ensemble of warm ochre stone buildings, linked by mile upon mile of beautiful covered arcades. The superbly maintained historic centre boasts Renaissance architecture to rival Venice. Few destinations can match Bologna when it comes to relaxed sightseeing, and exploring the city on foot is a constant visual treat.
Fine Italian regional cuisine
The sheer beauty of the city centre makes for Bologna a very romantic destination, but the city offers far more than fine architecture and historic interest. Bologna cuisine, with its rich meat dishes and creamy pasta sauces, is often cited as the best in Italy, and there are plenty of authentic and inexpensive places to eat alongside a wonderful collection of quality restaurants. Bologna also boasts smart designer shops and superb food markets, and the nightlife is surprisingly lively, thanks to a large student population. Bologna is the oldest university city in Europe, and the city is considerably busier during term time.
Stunning historical sights
Visitors will naturally gravitate to the central piazzas of Maggiore and Nettuno, where handsome renaissance squares sit surrounded by grand medieval palaces. Attractions such as the Teatro Comunale, the Basilica di San Francesco and the Towers of Bologna are other historic sights in the city. For a break from Renaissance bliss, head to excellent motor museums dedicated to Lamborghini, Ducati and Ferrari, try a few days in Genoa or Pisa, or travel to the Adriatic Coast and the beach resort of Rimini.
