Boston Getting Around

Getting Around Boston - Explore historic city streets on foot
All Boston public transport is run by The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and comprises underground and surface train systems, buses and ferries. However much of the city can be enjoyed on foot with some of its most popular attractions within a relatively compact area. The waterfront is made up of pedestrianised boardwalks, ideal for simply strolling around and Faneuil Hall Marketplace is equally as pleasant for window browsing and sightseeing. The city has an efficient and comprehensive bus network with over 150 routes across the Greater Boston area. It comprises a number of express routes into the city, suburban services and shuttles to and from Logan Airport.

Getting Around Boston - America's oldest underground system
The Boston subway system is made up of 5 main routes of which 3 are termed as rapid transit lines. Each enjoys several interchanges with other lines, commuter surface rail and bus stations to enable seamless connections across the city. It is the oldest underground system in the US, when its first route opened in 1897. The Boston over ground rail system is much more comprehensive and has services to virtually every major town in the state which terminates at North or South stations in the city. There are inter state Amtrak services from both stations. Day and weekend passes are available which can be used on some bus and underground routes.

Getting Around Boston - Cruise along the spectacular New England coastline
Several private companies operate ferry services out of Boston harbour, including many commuter routes and those popular with visiting tourists. There is an amazing range of daily pleasure cruises from here which sail to Cape Cod, nearby Cambridge, Nantuket and many more including dinner cruises and whale watching. Car hire is available in the city centre and from the airport and Boston does not suffer quite the traffic congestion that other large US cities do, however driving during the main rush hour periods in the city is best avoided.
