Cardiff Sightseeing
Visit the superb Cardiff Castle in the very centre of the city. From the outside the castle has a fairy tale quality while the interior features stunning Victorian restoration work and splendid gardens. Castell Coch is a 19th century fantasy of a castle containing terrific furniture and murals. Another classic Cardiff landmark is Llandaff Cathedral.
Cardiff Bay
The Cardiff Bay project is one of Europe’s largest waterfront developments and has transformed the city. Stroll Mermaid Quay for shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Mermaid Quay is also one of the principal departure points for boat tours and the popular waterbus service to the Millennium Stadium, the city centre and Penarth. Take a walk in the Cardiff Bay Wetlands. There’s plenty to do in the Red Dragon leisure centre, including the popular Doctor Who Exhibition. Other Cardiff attractions in the Cardiff Bay area include the Techniquest Science Discovery Centre, Craft in the Bay, the Goleulong 2000 Lightship, the Atlantic Wharf Leisure Village and the Wales Millennium arts centre.
Cardiff Museums And Galleries
The National Museum & Gallery of Wales has an outstanding collection of impressionist paintings, including Renoir, Monet and Cezanne. The “Evolution of Wales” is an entertaining account of the country’s history. The Museum of Welsh Life in St Fagans is an open-air museum centred on a collection of historic Welsh buildings. For contemporary exhibitions try the Chapter and G39 arts centres. The Ffotogallery is Wales’ finest space dedicated to photography.
Cardiff Shopping
Shopping in Cardiff has a superb reputation, with something to satisfy everyone. As well as familiar big stores, Cardiff offers excellent markets, attractive glass-covered Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades and plenty of relaxed pedestrian areas. The Central Market is one of Cardiff’s finest covered arcades. For crafts and souvenirs try the Old Library Craft Centre in The Hayes. Other popular Cardiff shopping centres include the Capitol Centre, Queen's Arcade and St David's.
Cardiff Nightlife
Cardiff nightlife is lively all year round and offers everything from cheap student bars and live music venues to sophisticated cocktail bars. A lot of Cardiff nightlife focuses on the bars and pubs of the St Mary Street area. For a little more style and sophistication try the Greyfriars Road area. Cardiff Bay is lively by day and night, particularly Mermaid Quay. The Red Dragon Centre is good for cinema and bowling.
