A guide to Croatia

Croatia has become an increasingly popular holiday destination in recent year,s and now sees a regular influx of visitors to its many beautiful coastal regions, particularly throughout the hot summer months. However, Croatia has more to offer than just stunning shoreline, with a selection of fascinating and vibrant city break destinations just waiting to be explored. With cheap flights operating from budget airlines to many of Croatia’s cities, the country is a great option for budget-friendly breaks, and is also a good choice for weekends away outside of the peak season, with the warm climate allowing for pleasant temperatures from April right through to October. Croatia’s most popular city break destinations are the southern cities of Dubrovnik and Split.

Dubrovnik, charming walled city

Dubrovnik is situated at the very southern tip of Croatia, meaning a trip here will involve a slightly longer flight. However, those willing to make the journey will certainly be glad they did upon arrival in this spectacular coastal city. The walled city of Dubrovnik is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wandering through its winding streets and amidst the many pavement cafes and restaurants will give you the perfect opportunity to soak up the ambience of this bustling and historic gem. The Adriatic Sea, just a stone’s throw, allows visitors to enjoy boat trips, kayaking and a range of other sea-based activities too. The 45-day Dubrovnik Summer Festival, held annually in July and August is a busy but superb time for a short break, with a packed programme of music, arts and entertainment to delight visitors and locals alike.

Split, cultural gem of the country

Along the coast from Dubrovnik sits Croatia’s other most popular city break destination, Split. This lively coastal city is the second largest in Croatia after the capital Zagreb, and remains full of interesting sites and entertainment venues. Said to be one of the cultural centres of Croatia, Split boasts a long history of arts, literature and music, and is home to a wide range of museums and galleries, including the attractive Gallery of Fine Arts. Other highlights include the Split Science Museum, the Zoo and the UNESCO World Heritage centre.
