Frankfurt Getting Around

Getting from Frankfurt airport
Frankfurt Airport – known in Germany as Rhein-Main-Flughafen or Flughafen Frankfurt am Main – is located 7.5 miles from the city centre. It is the largest airport in Germany, and third largest in Europe, serving as an important hub for international flights from around the world.

Railways
Frankfurt Central Station can now accommodate trains from all over Germany. Long distance trains are operated by Deutsche Bahn, EuroCity and InterCity. The Airport Long Distance Station, for ICE high speed trains, is situated beside the A3 Motorway. Local trains are integrated in the Public transport system Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), the second largest integrated public transport systems in the world.

Underground
The city has two underground railway systems: the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn:

The S-Bahn – an abbreviation for the German ‘Stadtschnellbahn’ (fast city train) – is an extensive rail network, above ground for the majority of the routes, but largely under in the city centre. The S-Bahn provides access to the suburbs of Frankfurt and to the main airport, as well to nearby cities and larger towns (such as Darmstadt, Hanau and Wiesbaden).

The U-Bahn has seven lines serving the city centre and some larger suburbs. The trains are lightrails as many lines travel along a track in the middle of the street instead of underground further from the city centre.

Straßenbahn
The tram system only operates within the centre of Frankfurt and some smaller suburbs. It also provides extensive access to the district of Sachsenhausen on the southern bank of the river Main.

Night buses
Take over the U-Bahn and Straßenbahn services between 1:30am to 3:30am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Taxis
Vehicles can be found outside all S-Bahn, U-Bahn stations and major intersections.

Velotaxi
Operators use a tricycle, with a sheltered capsule on top, and cover the city centre. There is room for two people.

Bicycles
Deutsche Bahn rent out distinctive silver-red bicycles to the public. Available at many major road intersections and railway stations – or by making a phone call – hire charges are €0.06/min or €15 per day.
