It may be surrounded by towering Alpine peaks but Grenoble itself is surprisingly flat. Most major attractions and facilities can be accessed easily on foot or by bicycle due to its compact city centre. Public transportation in Grenoble is efficient and comprehensive and features 30 different bus routes and 4 main tram lines. Tickets are interchangeable on both modes of transport and are good value for day and weekend passes. There is generally a frequency of every 10 minutes or less through the day and most services finish around 10pm at night. Most of the rolling stock is equipped for disabled travellers with low floors and wheelchair spaces. Getting around Grenoble during rush hour should be avoided where possible as buses and trams can become very overcrowded. There are also a number of express bus services to towns and cities in the region such as charming Annecy and Lyon allowing for easy and convenient day trip excursions.

There are both commuter and dedicated seasonal bus services which connect Grenoble with a multitude of stylish Alpine ski villages. In fact Grenoble is the perfect base for a ski city break with elegant resorts such as Chamrousse and Autrans just a 30 minute ride away. Other tempting winter sports hotspots include Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d'Huez, both reachable in just over 1 hour. Pre booking transport to the slopes is essential during the busy peak skiing season between late December and March. Getting around Grenoble is at its most convenient when travelling by taxi. There is always an abundant supply at designated stands throughout the city and at major hotels.
