Guernsey Things To Do
Historic St Peter Port
The capital of Guernsey still retains a sleepy traditional charm despite its increasing popularity to UK visitors and offers many historic sights and attractions. There are influences from many eras with a lovely 12th century church, the commanding harbour fortress of Castle Cornet and many remnants of German occupation during the Second World War. A myriad of museums highlight a rich heritage of seafaring and industry and a colourful Anglo-French past.
Walking
Due to its compact size, serious walkers can circumnavigate the island with ease within a day and many popular walking routes take in some of the most charming rural villages and most dramatic coastline found in the British Isles. Enjoy undemanding guided rambles through lush meadows and along towering cliffs and witness abundant birdlife and flora.
Beaches
With almost 30 beaches and bays, sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts are certainly spoilt for choice on a city break in Guernsey. Comprising wide sandy bays, secluded coves and crashing waves, the beaches are comparable with many of Mediterranean Europe's finest.
Handicrafts
Spend a day in the countryside watching master craftsmen at work producing a range of artistic products. Woodcarvers, silversmiths and potters have been following the same traditional techniques for generations and their work can be seen in small rural workshops and craft villages. Organised tours to these historic cottage industries can be arranged that include lunch, entertainment and the opportunity to take home some wonderful hand made gifts.
Sports
Sports and the great outdoors are part and parcel of everyday life in the Channel Islands and Guernsey has a dizzying array of active pursuits to enjoy. Unsurprisingly, fishing, sailing and water sports are exceedingly popular. Golf, cycling and horse riding are also well established or the fearless may wish to try a day of high speed go karting or micro lighting.
Castles
Castles and fortresses are simply everywhere on Guernsey, a legacy of its colourful past and many commanding sights provide an inspiring day of history, not to mention breathtaking panoramic views. The fortress of Castle Cornet is a definite must see, while the Norman stronghold of Ivy Castle or Vale Castle at St Sampson are truly impressive structures and house many historic artefacts and treasures from the era.
