Istanbul Tourist Attractions
A visit to the immense Topkapi Palace is simply a must during an Istanbul city break and plan for a whole day to really appreciate its size and beauty. This opulent home to the Ottoman sultans is Istanbul’s most visited attraction and was constructed in the 13th century and features the main living apartments, treasury and harem. Each section costs $10 entry but concessionary discounts are available. The Dolmabahce palace in Besiktas and the Blue Mosque are the two other most endearing attractions in Istanbul and show the true scale and opulence of the old Ottoman Empire. Both extremely inspiring days out and are both priced at $5 for a guided tour.
Istanbul Opening Hours
Shops are open every day in Istanbul often until very late into the evening in main tourist areas and some such as convenience stores remain open 24 hours a day. Banks operate between 9am and 5pm Monday - Friday with a 1 hour break at around 1pm. Post Offices provide longer hours of coverage from 8am until 8pm Monday to Saturday with several in central Istanbul also open on Sundays.
Istanbul Food & Drink
Istanbul has a great range of restaurants to choose from featuring every conceivable cuisine and catering to every budget. However traditional Turkish food has much more to offer than merely kebabs. Try a filling Kuzu güveç - lamb casserole or extravagant Mahmudiye, a speciality consisting of chicken meat mixed with honey, apricots, almonds, currants and black pepper. Fish is popular in Istanbul tavernas and varieties include white grouper, red mullet, swordfish and much more. Cooking methods include salting, grilling, poaching or pickling and often served with eggplant puree, parsley and lemon and garlic and chilli sauces.

Tipping & Etiquette In Istanbul
Tipping is done modestly in Turkey and an amount of around 5% of the bill would be sufficient. For upmarket eateries 10-15% of the bill seems to be the norm although again it is down to your own personal judgement and quality of the dining experience. Taxis and hotel staff should be rewarded with a few coins as a thank you and any personal tour guides will expect a small gratuity. Turkish bath attendants however should be given around 15% of the total bill to share out amongst themselves.

Like many Turkish cities, Istanbul is not well planned for easy wheelchair access and there are hazards to overcome such as narrow, congested streets and uneven surfaces. The people of Istanbul however are extremely helpful and will improvise to ensure a smooth journey and stress free experience at many of its illustrious attractions. Private adapted transport can be arranged and many of Istanbul's hotels do have some facilities for the disabled.
