Istanbul Things To Do
Turkish Baths
A not-to-be-missed Istanbul activity: a Turkish bath! A ‘hamam’ has been popular in Turkey for thousands of years but was perfected by the Ottomans. Not only a place to cleanse, the baths are of social importance too. Most hamams are simple and functional but older ones are stunning works of richly-decorated fine marble. The historic Galatasaray Hamam in Beyoglu and the Cagaloglu Hamam in Sultanahmet are the most popular Turkish bath locations.
Bosporus Cruise
The perfect way to spend a sightseeing city break in Istanbul; a cruise up the river! A ferryboat leaves from Eminonu (on the Golden Horn between Galata Bridge and Sirkeci Station) for a six-hour cruise up the Bosporus which includes stops at several villages en route to Anadolu Kavagi on the Black Sea. Alternatively, the shorter 1-1½ hour trip runs from Eminonu to Sariyer, a northern Bosporus town.
The Egyptian Spice Market
If you’re a foodie, top of your things-to-do list should be a trip here. Situated at the southern end of the Galata Bridge in the Eminonu district, next to the New Mosque (Yeni Cami), a sensual treat awaits. Discover a taste of the East with spices, dried fruits, nuts and seeds and lokum (Turkish delight).
The Hippodrome
This magnificent venue was the heart of political and sporting life of Constantinople. Venture back in time, picture the chariot races, and discover the 3,500 year old Egyptian Obelisk, weighing over sixty tons that was brought to the area by Emperor Theodosius in 390 AD.
Grand Bazaar
Shopping paradise! Situated next to Beyazit Square, the bazaar is the largest covered market in the world which houses over 4000 shops, mosques, banks, police stations and restaurants. Pick up everything from meerschaum pipes, leather goods, pottery, copper and brassware to all kinds of, cotton and wool and much, much more! There are a few important things to remember when shopping here: If you do decide to purchase something, haggling is essential!
