Ljubljana City Breaks
A guide to Ljubljana
Ljubljana features an enchantingly quaint city, boasting outstanding medieval, baroque and art nouveau architecture, and plenty of distinct Slovenian culture and character. Hungary, Austria and Italy have all played a large part in Ljubljana’s history, resulting in a charming mix of differing European styles. The beautiful Old Town has a remarkable cathedral, delightful squares and picturesque cobbled medieval streets, set cosily beneath the imposing 12th-century castle, whilst the river has striking bridges and animated riverbanks, lined with attractive waterfront cafes, bars and restaurants. Pedestrianised streets, gorgeous architecture, a pleasant smattering of low-key attractions, and the compact nature of the city make Ljubljana one of our most destinations.
Bohemian atmosphere, romantic charm
The city owes much of its charm to the appealing pavement cafes and romantic, rather bohemian atmosphere. There are characterful cafes, stylish cocktail bars, cosy restaurants and evening cruises on the river. Dining is a highlight and Slovenian cuisine takes in Italian ice cream, Austrian pastries and Hungarian goulash. Other attractions include a wonderful daily market, a nice collection of small-scale galleries and museums, and a cultural scene that includes jazz, opera, classical music and puppet theatre. A strikingly young population ensures fashionable shopping and a buzzing nightlife, despite the diminutive nature of the Slovenian capital.
Attractive at any time of the year
A great destination any time of the year, the city offers something for all seasons. A lovely festive market, mulled wine and beautifully lit streets ensure a particularly magical atmosphere at Christmas, whilst trips in the summer may coincide with the Ljubljana Festival with its street theatre and castle courtyard concerts. Mild spring and autumn weather, along with inviting riverside cafes and excellent warm cosy restaurants make the city a romantic option at any time of year. Day trips from here can include a trip to stunning Lake Bled and the dramatic mountains, as well as skiing at Krvavec.
