Milan Getting Around

Getting from Milan Airports

Milan has three principal airports. Malpensa, a large international airport, is connected to the city by the Malpensa Express railway service, which terminates at Cadorna Station. Linate Airport, within the city limits (for European and domestic traffic), connects to bus line 73, whilst Orio al Serio airport is close to the city of Bergamo.

Walking

Enjoy a fascinating walking tour and see Leonardo’s recently-restored Last Supper, Sforzesco Castle – home to Michelangelo’s final work, the Rondanini Pieta – the majestic Late Gothic Duomo and La Scala opera house, to name but a few.

Public Transport

The first street cars in Milan date back to 1841, and today trams, buses, trolley-buses and the three lines of the subway make traversing this beautiful city stress-free. Tickets cannot be purchased on vehicles, so visitors must buy them at newsstands and bars. A ticket lasts for 75 minutes on as many trams and buses as you like, but only once on the subway. Special daily and two-day tickets are on sale at subway newsstands.

Tramway

The Greater area of Milan has one of the most extensive tramway systems in the world, with more than 286 km of track, and 20 lines.

Subways

Milan Metro has 3 subway lines; M1 – red, M2 – green and M3 – yellow, and runs for more than 80 km. Extensions of these lines are currently under construction to create 10 new stations. Three additional lines are planned.

Trolleybus

The city has four trolleybus routes. Ninety-three bus lines carry more than 600 million passengers each year.

Railway

Milan has five major railway stations, and is the second railway hub of Italy. High-speed train lines are under construction across the country and new lines will open from Milan to Rome, Naples and Turin.

Taxis

The city has over 4,500 private licensed taxis. Vehicles are not easy to flag down off the street, so go to a taxi stand or call one. When calling a radio taxi, the meter starts running as soon as the driver gets the call.
