Castello Sforzesco

One of the city's most historic landmarks, the Castle Sforzawas the seat of Milan's nobility during medieval times, and now houses a number of museums and art collections. There are tours of the maze of corridors and halls, and the landscaped park, designed like an English garden, with ponds and fountains, is ideal for strolls and picnics.

Duomo Cathedral

This Gothic style cathedral dominates the landscape, and is the largest of its kind in the world. Visitors can admire the rich art displayed, including stunning stained glass windows and monumental statues, as well as climbing the stairs to the rooftop to take in the fabulous panoramas of the city.

Giardini Pubblici

'The Public Gardens offer the perfect refuge to the fast pace of city life, and the 40 acres of beautifully manicured gardens, lawns, lakes and ponds create a tranquil oasis. The parks is also home to the Natural Science Centre, the Padiglione D'Arte Contemporanea and and the Galleria D'Arte Moderna, which showcases some fantastic modern art.

Piazza Duomo

Cathedral Square is the main focus of city life, and is filled with locals and tourists alike. Flanked by the Duomo and the Royal Palace, the square teems with activity and hosts many open air summer concerts and performances.

Santa Maria delle Grazie

This large church is a UNESCO world heritage site, and most famous for the iconic 'Last Supper' painting by da Vinci, which hangs in the convent refectory. In the summer, its advisable to book several weeks in advance to view the masterpiece, which is one of the most popular attractions in Milan.

La Scala

The most famous opera house in the world, La Scala has seen some of the most important performances, since its opening in 1778. Tours of this sumptuous concert hall give an insight its colourful history, and backstage tours show production workshops, famous set designs and elaborate stage costumes.

Shopping

Milan’s boutiques and shops rival the best on the planet. Amble through Vias Montenapoleone, della Spiga, Sant’Andrea and Manzoni and discover every designer label under the sun from Armani and Dolce & Gabbana to Prada, Valentino and Versace. Discover up-and-coming designers on corso di Porta Ticinese or, for outlet buying, try D-Magazine or Salvagente.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele II

This traffic-free boulevard is a one-stop shopping haven, and lined with designer stores, high street names and trendy boutiques, is perfect for some retail therapy or some wistful browsing, and a great place to soak up city life.

Milan Markets

The street markets, bazaars and flea markets showcase the character of Milanese life, and are ideal for bargain hunters looking for that unique gift or souvenir. From traditional foodstuff, to antiques and vintage clothes, there's something for everyone here, and plenty of photo opportunities amongst the colourful open-air stalls.

Sport

Football is the most popular sport in Italy, and Milan is home to two world-famous clubs: AC Milan and Internazionale, who both play their home games at Giuseppe Meazza, the San Siro Stadium. The Monza Formula One circuit is located nearby, Olimpia Milano are a successful basketball team, Rhinos Milano American Football Club have won four Italian Super Bowls and CUS Milano Baseball have won eight Italian Scudetti.
