Perpignan City Breaks
A guide to Perpignan
Perpignan features an immensely likeable destination in France, with an enjoyably lively atmosphere and some superb beaches. Much of the charm here lies in a vibrant cultural mix, that combines the best of classic France with strong Spanish, Catalan and African influences. Perpignan enjoys higher temperatures and even more sunshine than the French Riviera, and with popular resorts just 15 minutes away, even the shortest of trip can enjoy an afternoon on one the region’s superb sandy beaches.
Sunny Catalan atmosphere, vibrant mix of cultures
Weekends here will focus on the atmospheric old town: an agreeable ensemble of narrow pedestrian streets with a fine cathedral, gothic palace and elegant 15th century mansions. Colourful central neighbourhoods also feature terrific food markets, traditional French groceries and an enjoyably diverse choice of specialist shops and cafes, reflecting the city’s large immigrant communities. The wide boulevards, palm-lined squares, orange trees and exotic gardens of the newer parts of the city all add to the sunny Catalan atmosphere, that makes the area unique. A trip here will more than satisfy lovers of good food and wine, with North African and Catalan cuisine alongside classic French cafes and brasseries.
Seasonal festivals to enjoy, wonderful climate
The superb climate and open friendly atmosphere makes Perpignan one of the most relaxing year-round destinations in France. Peak summer sees very high temperatures and the cultural explosion of the month-long Les Estivales festival in July, whilst visitors in October can experience the renowned Jazz Festival, and early autumn sees the city celebrating the wine harvest in style. There is also the chance to explore the fascinating countryside of the Languedoc Roussillon region, visit extraordinary Cathar castles and enjoy the scenic coastline.
