Pisa Getting Around

Getting around Pisa
Getting around Pisa does not require public transport. The vast majority of Pisa sights and attractions are in a compact central area.

Getting to/from Pisa airport
Getting from Pisa airport could not be easier. Pisa airport is very close to the city centre. Buses run to central Pisa Centrale train station every 20 minutes. The journey takes 15 minutes. A train also links Pisa airport with Pisa Centrale train station. Or take a taxi.

Walking
Walking in Pisa is a pleasure. The historic centre is compact and large areas are pedestrianized. The River Arno divides the city centre into a northern area (Tramontana) and southern (Mezzogiorno). You can walk along the River Arno to visit the (also leaning) campanile of San Michele dei Scalzi.

Bicycle.
Hiring a bicycle gives you the option of visiting one or two of the more distant Pisa sights, exploring the river and even some of the famous Tuscany countryside around Pisa. A bicycle will give you a better sense of how Pisa fits into the landscape.

Horse & Carriage
A stylish way to see the sights on a Pisa city break. Available from Piazza dei Miracoli.

Taxi
Easy to find at taxi ranks, Pisa Central Station and Piazza Duomo. Pisa taxis are metered. Surcharges for Sundays and public holidays. Shared taxis for up to 8 passengers run very regularly from Pisa airport to Centrale Station. Pisa taxis can also be booked by phone.

Boat tours
Pisa boat tours on the River Arno offer a different perspective of the city. Longer trips run to San Rossore park.

Sightseeing tours
Pisa sightseeing tours on open-top buses offer a rapid survey of Pisa attractions via San Rossore park, the Field of Miracles and the banks of the River Arno. A tourist mini-train also tours the city, starting from Piazza dell’Arcivescovado near the Leaning Tower.

Bus
Pisa buses reach most parts of the city but are hardly necessary for the vast majority of tourists. Bus tickets can be bought from tobacconists, bars and newsagents, or (slightly more expensive) on the bus. Stamp the ticket on board the bus. Pisa buses run to the airport, the Centrale train station and the Field of Miracles. A shuttle bus runs between the Park & Ride car park on via Pietrasantina and Piazza del Duomo.

Train
A train links Pisa Central Station and Pisa San Rossore station, which is near the Leaning Tower. Trains link Pisa Central Station with Pisa Airport. Trains are a quick way to visit Lucca (30 minutes) and Florence (1 hour).
